Reduction in CO2 Emissions

DPDgroup is the world leader[1] in voluntary carbon offset on the CEP market.


30 May 2017 - To mark the publication of its first Communication on Progress (COP) for United Nations Global Compact, DPDgroup is taking stock of its unique commitment to carbon neutrality that makes up nearly 5% of the European voluntary carbon offset market.

DPDgroup is committed via its DrivingChangeTM programme to making every parcel delivered carbon-neutral, for all of its customers, at no additional cost.

DPDgroup is focussing on the measurement of its CO2 emissions, introducing reduction measures and offsetting the balance on the voluntary market.

1. Measuring

The first step in the company's commitment is to assess the CO 2 emissions resulting from its activity. The main performance indicators are measured quarterly, using a specific tool developed by DPDgroup that precisely evaluate the environmental impact against current standards. More than 300 employees monitor these indicators across Europe. 

Each year, an audit is carried out by external firm Mazars to verify the adequacy of the calculation model and the quantity of CO2 emitted.


2. Reducing

The second step is to reduce the carbon footprint by improving the efficiency of DPDgroup's transport operations:

  • Improvement of business processes: Optimisation of routes and loading, using double-deck trucks for example, etc.
  • Deployment of innovative services such as Predict and Pickup, which make it possible to successfully complete more deliveries on first attempt, and therefore reduce CO2 emissions
  • Development of a fleet of vehicles powered by alternative fuels. DPDgroup's fleet of alternative vehicles travelled more than 6.2 million kilometres in 2016.

In 2016, DPDgroup had already achieved a 10.1% reduction in its CO2 emissions per parcel compared to 2013.


3. Offsetting

Finally, for the third stage of the programme, DPDgroup voluntarily offsets 100% of the remaining transport emissions by purchasing carbon credits, every year since 2012.

In 2016, more than 863,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent were offset. This makes DPDgroup the world leader in voluntary offsetting in the CEP (Courrier, Express, Parcel) sector. DPDgroup makes up nearly 5% of the European voluntary carbon offset market.

With the support of EcoAct, European expert on climate strategies, DPDgroup selects offset projects that meet the best international standards (including Gold Standard, VCS and UNFCCC).

DPDgroup's offset programme includes six projects related to the generation of clean and renewable energy. These offset projects are located in the countries in which DPDgroup operates: Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and the United Kingdom, but also Turkey and India.

As a result, in 2016 the equivalent of 714,000 MWh of energy, or the annual consumption of 250,000 households[2], was produced through offset projects supported by DPDgroup.
